UNIT I
The internet  and other addictions
 for years , researchers  have  been trying  to make sense  of the biology  and
psichology  of  addiction. its cause  and it is cures.
in the past, addictions were viewed  primarily  as addictions substances  such as
drugs, alcohol, and nicotine.
recently , however , many reserchers have begun  to think that  people  can also
be addicted to activities such as  gambling, sex, shopping, and even  travel.
one activity  that has  become  increasingly  common throughout  the world is
computer  use , specificallyn  on line  computer communication through aa
medium  called  the internet .
the internet , also known  as  the net, is a network  that  connects  computer
systems.
like  the railroad  and  telegraph , it is  a network that allows  people  t o exchanges
information across vast  distances.Although many  people are discovering what  a
powerful communication  tool  the internet  is , others  are also realizing in
dangers . Many individuals  have  begun overusing this new tool  and are
spending  hours and hours  on line . IN fact , some  psichologists  have even
labeled  this overuse phenomenon as internet  addiction. Whether on line  addiction
can be  considered  a true addiction  is a question for medical  researchers

The Bold and the Bashful. Vocabulary terms Bold: A bold person is a person who is extrovert, brave, confident, talkative, and outgoing. Modal Verbs. Degrees of certainty Grammar Explanation We use modals of certainty to make deductions or assumptions, that is, to make judgments and opinions about a situation in the present. These modal verbs are: must, can't/couldn't, should/ought to, may, might and could. We use must when we have reasons to be sure of something. We use can't/couldn't when we think something is impossible. We use should/ ought to where we think something is quite sure and have a big possibility of happening. Might, may and could are used in situations where the speaker is not sure of the deduction or assumption he makes due to lack of information or because it is not evident.
